Technical Data Sheet

StoneFix S2 Natural Stone White Rapid Set Flexible Adhesive is a professional and highly flexible wall and floor tile adhesive designed for fixing tiles to a variety of substrates including timber surfaces where slight movement can occur such as floating floors, tongue and grooved floorboards, chipboard and plywood. Designed for natural stone and fully vitrified, high density tiles such as porcelain, ceramics and mosaics, Eco friendly natural stone tile adhesive.

  • Natural Stone
  • Concrete / Chipboard / Timber
  • Internal / External
  • Eco Friendly
  • Porcelain / Ceramic / Mosaics
  • Underfloor Heating
  • Swimming Pools / Wet Areas
  • Anti-stain / Watermark Proof

DO NOT apply if frost is forecast within 24 hours, in wet conditions, in temperatures below 5°C or above 25°C, to areas in direct sunlight or to substrates that are hot. Never add water or fresh adhesive and or powder to the adhesive mix which has already started to set.

Surfaces, including existing tiles, must be clean sound and strong enough to support the weight of the tiles and the adhesive. Curing compounds, oil stains, wax residues, laitance and other contaminants must be removed. StoneFix S2 White Rapid Set Flexible Adhesive can absorb minor surface irregularities provided that the bed thickness does not exceed 20mm. Gypsum based substrates, aerated concrete and interior asphalt should be primed with StoneFix Acrylic Primer.

Porous substrates must be primed with a suitable StoneFix Acrylic Primer. Non porous substrates such as ceramics, should be primed using a slurry coat of StoneFix S2 White Rapid Set Flexible Adhesive and StoneFix Acrylic Primer. The slurry coat should be one part powder to one part liquid by volume. Apply thinly with a brush and allow to dry. Existing Glazed, Unglazed Tiles, Terrazzo and Quarry Tiles Apply slurry coat: 1 part adhesive to 1 part StoneFix Acrylic Primer, apply a thin coat with a brush and allow to dry.

Gypsum Plasters

The surface should be roughened up using a wire brush or other abrasive tool as this will remove the surface laitance. Then apply 2 neat coats of StoneFix Acrylic Primer.

Anhydrite Floor Screeds

The substrate must not leach moisture. Anhydrite screeds must not have a moisture content greater than 0.5% or 75% relative humidity (RH) is required. This can easily be tested with a hygrometer. Once the screed has dried it is essential that surface laitance is removed. This is achieved by scabbling, followed by vacuum cleaning to remove any dust, then followed by either a suitable epoxy or StoneFix Acrylic Primer.

Plaster Boards

Skimming is not required, ensure boards are dry, securely fixed and rigid. Prime with StoneFix Acrylic Primer.

Timber Floors

The surface should be prepared to provide a rigid and secure base without deflection. The face, reverse and edges of the boards must be primed with StoneFix Acrylic Primer, to prevent the ingress of ambient moisture.

Mix 20kg of StoneFix S2 White Rapid Set Flexible Adhesive with approximately 5 litres of cold clean water until a smooth creamy consistency is achieved using a suitable drill with whisk attachment, mix for 2 minutes, allow to stand for 2 minutes then re-mix. This process allows the polymer additives to dissolve and activate.

The mixed adhesive is applied to the prepared surface with a trowel and then combed through with a suitably sized notched trowel in straight ribs to create a ribbed adhesive bed. The tiles should be pressed into place with a twisting and sliding action to achieve full adhesive to tile transfer. For tiling to walls in dry internal locations the adhesive contact should be at least 65% of the back of the tile. When tiling to floors and all external situations, or in wet areas such as showers and swimming pools, solid bed fixing should be achieved. To achieve a solid bed usually requires the tiles to be buttered immediately prior to placing into the ribbed bed so no voids are left beneath the tiles. The size of the notched trowel chosen depends on the size of the tile, the surface being tiled, the profile on the back of the tile and the degree of coverage area required. Remove and inspect a tile occasionally to check that adequate bedding is being achieved. Expansion joints must be provided according to the relevant Part of BS 5385. Test open time by touching the adhesive bed with a finger; if adhesive transfers to the finger a safe bond is assured, if not, the adhesive must be removed and replaced with fresh material. Never add water or powder to a mix that has begun to set. Do not apply at substrate temperatures below 5oC or in conditions of extreme heat. Exterior installations must be protected from direct sunlight, wind or rain.

The surface should be prepared to provide a rigid and secure base without deflection and suitable to support the intended weight. Tongue and groove / chipboard (moisture resistant quality) must be dry, rigid and securely fixed and screwed to joists at 300mm centres. Overlaid timber floors must be over boarded with exterior or marine grade plywood with a minimum thickness 15mm. All boards must be screwed at 300mm centres and the face, reverse and edges of the boards must be primed with StoneFix Acrylic Primer, to prevent the ingress of ambient moisture.

1kg of the mixed material will cover approximately:

  • 0.3m2 using 8mm notched trowel
  • 0.5m2 using 6mm notched trowel
  • 0.75m2 using 4mm notched trowel

Coverage is dependent on the application technique, substrate and the type of tiles used and these figures are therefore only a guide.
